1950 Gibson LG-2
1950 Gibson LG-2
This is a 1950 Gibson LG-2, as indicated by the factory order number stamped on the neck block, the first #3 indicating the year of the build. This one has seen its fair share of repairs, but it remains all original and ready to play. The repairs include two repaired and touched up back cracks, a long top crack extending from the treble side of the pickguard and another extending from the neck block on the treble side rim. They aren’t the prettiest of repairs, but they are solid.
Typical features of an LG-2 from this year include scalloped X-bracing, a small maple bridge plate with a pair of bolts, visible on the underside and covered by a pair of pearl dots on the original Brazilian rosewood bridge. All of these are original and undisturbed, save for a few beads of glue around the underside of the top- internal evidence of the top crack repair. Beyond visible signs on the interior of the various crack repairs, the interior remains clean and original. The exterior retains its original finish, with areas of touch up and localized overspray around the crack repairs. Overall, there are dings, dents, crazing and pickwear, the latter predominantly around the soundhole and pickguard.
The neck has been neatly reset and the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard retains its original frets, with a few divots in the lower position, but still playing beautifully. The neck retains its original finish. The profile is a chunky soft V shape, an evolutionary step away from the more pronounced V of earlier decades. The tuners are the original three on a strip open back Kluson tuners with newer buttons replacing undoubtedly crumbling originals.
This is an exceptional player grade LG-2 with a punchy, bluesy sound from the start of arguably the best decade of Gibson manufacture.
