C. F. Martin HD-28S Custom Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2012), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 1607026, natural finish, Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Alpine spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This slightly offbeat vintage-styled Martin is one of a limited run of 50 of this custom model, built exclusively for Guitar Center in 2012. It is a fairly deluxe 12-fret vintage style HD-28S Dreadnought, with one unusual feature of a narrower 1 11/16 nut width typically used on the 14-fret versions. The back and sides are beautifully bookmatched Madagascar rosewood and the top is nicely grained Italian Alpine spruce with scalloped braces. The top is bordered in the traditional herringbone with a tortoise pattern pickguard and an aging toner finish.
The neck is mahogany with an unbound ebony fingerboard with 1930s-style snowflake inlay. The guitar is fitted with an adjustable truss rod. The slotted headstock is faced with Madagascar rosewood and fitted with gold-plated Grover pre-war style tuners. This is a truly superb guitar, with a deep and powerful sound that rivals most any D-style instrument old or new. 12 or so years along this guitar is just starting to age in, a wonderful instrument to play and a testament to Martin's continued ability to craft exceptional traditional-styled guitars.
Overall length is 40 1/4 in. (102.2 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This guitar shows some signs of play with light general wear but and one notable repair. There is some finish worn to the wood on the back of the neck, just like the old ones! The top has a spot of wear through the topcoat where the player's arm rests, with a few scattered tiny dinks but no pick marks. The back and sides a few small dings and scuffs, with a set of repaired grain splits off the back edge on either side of the backstrip. These are neatly sealed and polished out; one on the bass side is fairly short, on the treble side it runs all the way up the back. They are neatly mirrored so we would assume the rosewood had a weakness in the grain in that spot.
The frets show some wear in the lower positions but nothing that affects play. A fairly large strap button has been added to the treble side of heel. This is a fine sounding and playing guitar; one of the nicer Martins we have had and a splendid example of the still-underappreciated 12-fret Dreadnought format. With over a decade of aging and some definite play time under its belt this guitar is starting to mature into a truly splendid instrument. It resides in the original Burgundy-lined Martin HSC with some original paperwork. Overall Excellent Condition.
