Harmony Comet
Harmony Comet
This is a recent Harmony Comet, made in the USA, at the same Kalamazoo plant famous for Gibson and, later, Heritage guitars. This example features a unique look, great build quality and a nice selection of tones.
The body is a semi-hollow construction with a carved mahogany top and a carved mahogany back. The set-neck is affixed to the body with a long tenon, the manufacturer claims this helps with sustain. The body itself features a single ply of binding on both the top and back, with no other binding. The combination of the burst finish, binding, cupcake tone and volume knobs and the six-in-a-line headstock evoke the Harmony products of the 1960’s.
The neck itself is a “D” shape with a rosewood fingerboard with a 12” radius and a 25” scale. There are locking tuners, a three ply truss rod cover along with a gold decal Harmony Comet logo on the headstock. There are two “gold foil” humbucking pickups bracketed by a three ply raised pickguard. The strings are held in place with a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece.
The electronics are simple but effective. They are controlled by volume and tone knobs and a stout three way switch. The volume knob is a push-pull, offering the option of coil splitting.
Overall, this is a great looking, well balanced guitar with great tone options available. Weighing in at 6.2 pounds, it is also lightweight without sacrificing sustain.
